The crankshaft is one of the main enginecomponents directly affected by the permanentdemand for increased specific output of combustionengines. In order to achieve reliable designs,simulation tools providing accurate results arerequired to analyze crankshaft dynamics behaviorand durability.AVL EXCITE Power Unit has proven its ability tocalculate results close to the real ones in manyprojects and when compared with experimentalresults. The use of two distinct categories ofcrankshaft 3D dynamic models is offered: either acondensed volumetric FE model obtained by combined static and dynamic reduction using commercialFE solvers or a novel modeling technique developed by AVL, the crankshaft ‘structured model’.
